U101 Sections for First-Gen Students

The University of South Carolina created the University 101 classes to help make the transition to college life as smooth as possible for first-year students. You will learn a lot of useful skills for acclimating to your new life and, with special sections taught in the Maxcy College Classroom, you'll have an unmatched opportunity to meet other first-gen students.

We offer two sections of University 101 classes this fall that are specifically designed to help students who identify as first-generation make a successful transition to higher education.

Why it matters: Transitioning to campus life is crucial to finding success in college. This unique U101 class will connect students to the resources available for them.

20% of the University of South Carolina’s undergraduate students identify as first-gen.

What’s Next: U101 First-Gen Section numbers will be provided when you register for the classes during Summer Orientation.

Amanda Therrell, director of the Graduation and Retention Network and a first-gen college graduate herself, will teach these sections.
