The SmartState Center for Environmental Nanoscience and Risk (CENR) is funded by an endowment provided by the SC Education Lottery and private donations. The CENR was formed in August 2012 with the appointment of Jamie Lead, as Professor of Environmental Nanoscience and Risk and the first Director of the Center. The CENR aims to investigate the effects and behaviors of manufactured and natural nanoparticles in the environment and subsequent effects on environmental and human health. A second major strand of interest for the CENR is the development of low hazard and low risk nanotechnologies for the benefit of human and environmental health.
