Principles of Visual Communications

Theory and history of visual communication in the mass media emphasizing informational and persuasive messages created by graphic, photographic, and multimedia processes. 

Learning Objectives/Outcomes

  •  Identify historical origins and developments of visual communications in fine arts and mass media. 
  • List and define principles of good design. 
    Identify strategies for using typography, color, photography, videography and illustration in crafting effective visual communication messages. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply the above visual communications strategies through a series of out-of-class design assignments. 
  • Identify legal and ethical issues surrounding creation and use of visual communications messages. 
  • Critically analyze and critique visual communications messages for the quality of their design, their effectiveness as mass media messages and how they address issues of a more diverse and inclusive society.
