Kupfer and Mock Garner AAG Awards

Work of USC geographers honored by national organization

The Association of American Geographers annually recognizes outstanding accomplishments by its members. This year two South Carolina geographers, John Kupfer and  Cary Mock, were singled out for their accomplishments.

John Kupfer was named an AAG Fellow in recognition of his work advancing geography. A biogeographer, Kupfer has published more than 70 papers focused on the how ecological processes are shaped by environmental conditions and by human activities. Twice his research has received awards for excellence by his peers in the AAG biogeography specialty group, and he has contributed his time and talents to numerous AAG committees over the years.

The AAG's 2025 Media Achievement Award was presented to Cary Mock for his exceptional ability to communicate climate information to the media. Mock is particular adept at not only explaining a current weather pattern, but — with his years of archival research — at placing it in its historical context. The network of media contacts he has developed have come to rely on him as a compelling and authoritative source on weather events.

Congratulations, John and Cary!
