BTC Through Your Major

Some non-Honors courses in your major – like an internship or a study abroad course – could fulfill your Honors Beyond the Classroom requirement.

Fulfilling Honors BTC Experiences Through Your Major

Many majors have out of classroom experiences that can count as requirements towards their major and may also fulfill the Honors BTC requirement. These credit-bearing experiences in an academic college, such as the Darla Moore School of Business or Arnold School of Public Health, may fulfill Honors BTC.

  • Major courses that fulfill Honors BTC are pre-approved by the Honors College. You can find them in our BTC database below.
  • Students may use up to 9 hours of approved non-Honors departmental BTC coursework to fulfill the BTC requirement and up to 2 Honors electives (a total of 9 credit hours).
    • Approved course definition: vetted and pre-approved by the Honors College; appears on the BTC Through Your Major database.
    • Non-Honors course definition: anything that isn’t an Honors section (H01, H10) or an SCHC designated course, for example:
      • CHEM 496 (research)
      • JOUR 537 (internship)
      • EXSC 444 (practicum)
      • Non-SCHC study abroad
  • For courses with variable credit hours, you must complete at least 3 hours to fulfill Honors BTC or an Honors elective.
  • These courses require a DegreeWorks exception.

The searchable database below includes major courses that are pre-approved to fulfill Honors BTC. If a course is not listed and you think it might fulfill Honors BTC (including independent study courses), use the Credit-Bearing Course Request Form to submit the course syllabus and information for review.

If you have a question about the Honors BTC requirement please talk with your Honors advisor.
