Distinctive Partnerships and Educators

Leaders in Ultrasound Education

In 2006, the University of South Carolina's School of Medicine Columbia became the first in the nation to integrate ultrasound technology throughout a four-year medical curriculum. Ultrasound education provides students with a beneficial career advantage as it further enhances the quality of care patients receive.

We are the only university in South Carolina and one of just 32 public universities to receive both the top-tier research designation and the community engagement designation from the Carnegie Foundation. That means students have the opportunity to work closely with research faculty within the School of Medicine and on research projects around the university.

Focused on Community Health

One of the state’s most persistent health care issues is that 1.2 million South Carolinians live in an area where there isn’t enough primary care. Graduates of the School of Medicine Columbia lead the nation for practicing in underserved areas and more than half of our students choose to practice in South Carolina after completing their education.

Health Sciences Campus

The university is in the early planning stages of construction for a new, 16-acre health sciences campus in Columbia. Construction on the new medical education and biomedical science research buildings is slated to begin in 2025 with completion in 2027. It will be a state-of-the-art learning environment designed for teaching South Carolina’s next generation of health care professionals and research scientists.
