Before registering for classes each semester, you must meet with your assigned academic advisor in the College of Nursing.
Our advisors are here to support BSN students throughout both stages of our program. Students will meet one-on-one with their Pre-Nursing advisor on our main USC-Columbia campus each semester. In Upper Division, students have a dedicated advisor at our Clinical Education Building in West Columbia where they will meet for group advising each semester. However, Upper Division students are always welcome to schedule one-on-one meetings with their advisor. Our advisors are a great resource for students, and we encourage you to reach out or schedule an appointment if needed.
After Spring semester grades have been finalized, students who are on track to apply to Upper Division the following Fall receive a preliminary ranking email from the College of Nursing. This ranking email includes your official Progression GPA at the end of the Spring term and where you rank (top, middle, or lower third) within the projected applicant cohort.
Every student in the Pre-Nursing program should complete a Parallel Plan with Exploratory Advising so that they have a backup plan if not admitted to Upper Division. Parallel Plans allow students to move into a new major and still have a high likelihood of graduating when they originally expected. Some popular Parallel Plans related to healthcare are listed below.
Exercise Science Parallel Plan
A webinar will take place in early January for students interested in the Public Health BA parallel plan. Check back here for updates in December!
We encourage students to meet with Exploratory Advising if they have questions about these plans. Students should be prepared to discuss their parallel plan with their primary Pre-Nursing advisor during the semester they enroll in NURS 216 and plan to apply to Upper Division.
Additionally, if you are interested in still pursuing nursing, you have the option to apply for our Master’s Entry to Practice Nursing program. This program is designed for students who graduate with a bachelor's degree in something other than Nursing. Pre-Nursing students will have completed all necessary pre-requisites for this program by the end of their second year in Pre-Nursing or earlier. For more information including application materials, pre-requisites, and admission criteria, please visit the Master's Entry to Practice Nursing program website.
