Mark Smith is the Director of the Institute for Southern Studies and Carolina Distinguished Professor of History. He writes about the American South and the history of the senses. He recently published A Sensory History Manifesto, which is a brief and timely meditation on the field.

Dr. Emily Ruth Allen
Emily Ruth Allen is an instructor in the both Institute for Southern Studies and the USC School of Music. Her current project focuses on Carnival parade musics in Mobile, Alabama, inspired by her experiences marching in the parades during her high school and college years.
